Sun May 18 18:00:00 UTC 2025: **Quetta Gladiators Snatch Top Spot in Thrilling Last-Ball Victory Over Multan Sultans**
RAWALPINDI – The Quetta Gladiators secured their place at the top of the Pakistan Super League standings in dramatic fashion, defeating the Multan Sultans by two wickets on the final ball of the match. Hasan Nawaz emerged as the hero, smashing an unbeaten 67 off 38 balls to chase down a target of 186.
The Sultans, already at the bottom of the table, opted to bat first after winning the toss. Opener Yasir Khan provided a quick start with 45 off 25, supported by Jahanzaib Sultan (25). However, spinner Usman Tariq proved to be a key disruptor, claiming 3-32 and stifling Multan’s momentum. Contributions from Tayyab Tahir (36) and late hitting from Shahid Aziz (29) and Aamer Azmat (21 not out) helped Multan reach a respectable 185-7.
Quetta’s chase began explosively with Khawaja Nafay hitting 51 off just 26 balls in a rapid opening stand with Saud Shakeel (18). The Gladiators looked comfortable until a mid-innings wobble saw them lose wickets in a flurry, slumping from 116-3 to 161-7. Seamer Shahid Aziz caused havoc with 3-29.
Needing 11 runs off the final over bowled by Mohammad Hasnain, Nawaz struggled initially, managing only two runs from the first three deliveries. However, he then launched a crucial six down the ground, reigniting Quetta’s hopes. Abrar Ahmed was then run out attempting a second run, leaving Nawaz to face the final ball with the game on the line. He delivered once again, clearing long-off for another six to seal a memorable victory for Quetta.
With this win, Quetta Gladiators are guaranteed top spot in the league standings and will face the second-placed team in the qualifier on May 1st. The winner will advance to the final, while the loser will get a second chance against the winner of the first eliminator match. Multan Sultans, meanwhile, conclude their disappointing season with just one win from their ten matches.
