Mon May 12 15:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Heatwave Sweeps Across India, Localized Rainfall Offers Little Relief
**New Delhi, May 13, 2025** – A scorching heatwave is gripping large swathes of India, with several states bracing for intense heat and potential heatstroke this week. While sporadic thunderstorms and rain have offered temporary respite in some areas, widespread relief is not expected until the monsoon arrives.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a western disturbance over the Western Himalayas will bring isolated showers to eastern Rajasthan, Delhi-NCR, Punjab, and Haryana today. However, stronger winds are forecast for Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir (50-60 kmph) on May 14th, followed by moderate rain in Himachal Pradesh on May 16-17th. The rest of the country will remain largely dry during this period.
Severe heat is expected in Jharkhand from May 13-15, with a high likelihood of heatstroke. West Bengal faces similar conditions on May 14-15, while Uttar Pradesh is under a heatwave alert from May 14-18. Bihar will experience hot and humid weather until May 16th, and parts of Rajasthan could see temperatures soar to 45°C with heatstroke risk this week.
Strong winds (up to 50 kmph) are predicted for Odisha on May 14th and Bihar/Jharkhand on May 15-16th. Chattisgarh is forecast to experience thunderstorms and strong winds (up to 60 kmph) today. Maharashtra’s Marathwada and central regions anticipate strong winds on May 14-15.
The IMD advises citizens to take precautions against the intense heat, including staying hydrated and limiting outdoor exposure during peak sun hours.
