Tue May 13 14:36:55 UTC 2025: ## Coimbatore Police Grapple with Unpaid Traffic Fines as Two-Thirds of Violators Dodge Penalties

**Coimbatore, May 13, 2025** – Despite the implementation of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras across Coimbatore, only one-third of traffic rule violators have paid their penalties, leaving the Coimbatore City Police grappling with a significant backlog of unpaid fines.

According to official data, between January 1 and April 30, 2025, a staggering 1,32,733 road rule violation cases were registered, resulting in a total of ₹12,81,13,100 in fines. However, only ₹4,25,69,700 has been paid, leaving a considerable amount outstanding. In addition to the fines, 21,284 driving licenses have been suspended.

While commercial vehicle owners (yellow number plates) generally settle their fines annually, private vehicle owners (white number plates with black letters) often evade payment until vehicle fitness certificate renewal or vehicle sale. Even then, many fail to transfer ownership, particularly for two-wheelers and four-wheelers, leaving the penalties unresolved.

City Police sources acknowledge the issue and state that discussions are underway to find effective solutions to address this challenge and improve fine collection rates. The police are working to identify strategies to encourage payment and enforce traffic regulations more effectively.

This situation highlights the challenges of enforcing traffic rules and collecting fines, even with advanced technology. The Coimbatore City Police are committed to finding innovative approaches to address this issue and ensure road safety in the city.
