**Malappuram, Kerala, May 12, 2025** – A Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala has placed 152 individuals under surveillance after a 42-year-old woman was infected. The woman, who has been in a coma since May 1st, remains in critical condition. Health officials have collected animal samples within a 500-meter radius of her residence and are conducting a fever surveillance in nearby areas.
While 49 individuals initially identified as contacts have tested negative for the virus, an additional 40 were added to the contact list on Monday, bringing the total to 152. Of these, 62 are considered high-risk, and eight are hospitalized, with two in intensive care. Prophylactic treatment has been administered to 13 high-risk individuals as a precaution.
The investigation is ongoing, with health officials visiting houses within a three-kilometer radius of the patient’s home. The Animal Husbandry department is actively involved in collecting samples to determine the source of the infection. The situation remains under close monitoring.
