**Bengaluru, May 12, 2025** – The Karnataka state government plans to host a large-scale celebration in October to commemorate the 50th anniversary of anganwadi centers in the state. Women and Child Development Minister Laxmi Hebbalkar announced the plans following a review meeting of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) programs. The event will reportedly include an invitation to approximately 100,000 anganwadi workers, along with the Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and the Union Minister for Women and Child Development.

The minister highlighted the recent ₹1,000 increase in honorarium for anganwadi workers and assistants, a move included in the state budget. She also noted the Centre’s recognition of 3,800 mini anganwadi centers in Karnataka – the highest number in India – crediting the state’s successful advocacy for their recognition. A committee headed by retired judge Venugopal Gowda also praised the department’s performance.

Ms. Hebbalkar emphasized the importance of establishing pre-primary classes (LKG and UKG) in anganwadis, stating it’s crucial for the department’s continued success. The review meeting also addressed issues like appointing anganwadi workers and assistants, and the allocation and release of grants to ICDS.
