**New Delhi, May 10, 2025** – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced today that the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala on May 27th, almost two weeks earlier than the usual June 1st onset. This would mark the earliest arrival since 2009, when the monsoon began on May 23rd.
The IMD’s prediction follows an April forecast of above-normal rainfall for the 2025 monsoon season (June-September), ruling out the possibility of El Niño conditions. The ministry anticipates a cumulative rainfall of 105% of the long-period average (87 cm), with a 5% margin of error. The monsoon typically covers the entire country by July 8th and retreats by October 15th.
