Sat May 10 12:24:20 UTC 2025: ## Mysore NGO to Rally Against Tree Felling After 40 Trees Cut Down

**Mysore, Karnataka, May 10, 2025** – Following public outrage over the felling of 40 mature trees in Mysore for road widening, the Mysore Grahakara Parishat (MGP), a local NGO, is convening a meeting to strategize tree conservation efforts. The meeting, scheduled for Sunday at 4 p.m. at the MGP office, will feature botanist S. Natesh, author of “Iconic Trees of India,” who will advise on collective action to prevent further deforestation.

The recent incident, described by environmentalists as the “murder” of decades-old trees along Hyder Ali Road, sparked widespread protests, including a candlelight vigil, replanting drives, online petitions, and complaints filed with the Chief Minister, Lokayukta, National Green Tribunal, and Deputy Commissioner. The People’s Union for Civil Liberty (PUCL) even called for amendments to the Karnataka Preservation of Trees Act of 1976. A successful crowdfunding effort even saw the transplantation of a fallen giant tree near Kukkarahalli lake.

While an inquiry has been ordered by the Minister for Forests, Ecology, and Environment, Eshwar Khandre, concerns remain that approximately 300 more trees are slated for removal for various linear projects. The MGP stresses that tree felling should be a last resort, advocating for exploring all preservation alternatives. The upcoming meeting aims to create a unified voice against unnecessary deforestation in Mysore. For more information, contact 0821-2515150.
