**New Delhi, May 10, 2025** – In response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has significantly expanded its security presence at 69 Indian civil airports. Following a directive from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), the CISF will temporarily oversee cargo operations and in-line hold baggage screening systems until May 18th.
This temporary measure, implemented immediately, marks a significant change. Previously, the CISF’s responsibilities were primarily limited to passenger and cabin baggage screening. Cargo and in-line hold baggage screening system (ILHBSS) checks were handled by private security personnel employed by airlines and airport operators.
The CISF spokesperson stated that this enhanced mandate is crucial for reinforcing airport security nationwide. The CISF will now directly supervise cargo and baggage operations, as well as oversee the security staff responsible for ILHBSS. Furthermore, CISF personnel are authorized to conduct random checks and monitor access control at these airports. All airports under CISF cover have already implemented the new security measures.
The decision to expand the CISF’s role is intended to provide a crucial secondary layer of security checks, bolstering aviation safety in light of the heightened security concerns following the Pahalgam attack. The additional security measures are expected to remain in place until May 18th.
