Fri May 09 19:44:39 UTC 2025: ## Karnataka Delays Decision on University Closures
**Bengaluru, May 10, 2025** – A Karnataka government sub-committee has postponed a decision on closing nine of ten recently established universities. The committee, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, met Friday to review the universities’ finances. While an initial proposal called for the closure of nine institutions, including the Maharani Cluster University and Nrupatunga University in Bengaluru, as well as Bidar University, disagreements prevented a final vote.
The delay stems from “technical reasons,” according to sources within the committee. A report by the Karnataka State Higher Education Council revealed that ₹342 crore (approximately $41 million USD) is needed to cover the first five years of operational costs for the new universities, encompassing staff salaries, infrastructure, and equipment.
Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar stated that a final decision on the closures will be announced following another committee meeting.
