**NEW DELHI** – In a dramatic escalation of tensions, the Indian armed forces launched “Operation Sindoor” early Wednesday, carrying out 24 precision missile strikes on nine terrorist targets within Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK). The operation, a response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 people, targeted strongholds of the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist groups, including Muridke and Bahawalpur.
Indian sources claim the strikes resulted in the deaths of over 70 terrorists and injured over 60 more, significantly degrading the operational capabilities of these groups. JeM chief Maulana Masood Azhar, however, has alleged that 10 family members and four aides were killed in the strikes.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed the operation, stating that the targets were terrorist infrastructure used to plan and direct attacks against India. The strikes, which commenced around 1 a.m., occurred hours before a nationwide security drill was scheduled.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had previously vowed to pursue those responsible for the Pahalgam attack, promising retribution. The operation marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between India and Pakistan.
