Wed May 07 22:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Mariners Claim Outfielder Leody Taveras from Rangers in Low-Risk, High-Reward Move

**Seattle, WA (May 7, 2025)** – The Seattle Mariners announced today they have claimed outfielder Leody Taveras off waivers from the Texas Rangers. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Luis F. Castillo has been designated for assignment. Taveras, 26, will immediately join the Mariners’ active roster, with Rhylan Thomas optioned to Triple-A Tacoma as the corresponding move.

Taveras, a former top prospect for the Rangers, has struggled offensively this season, posting a .241/.259/.342 line and a 68 wRC+ in 82 plate appearances. While his speed and defensive abilities are highly regarded, his inconsistent bat led to him being placed on waivers by Texas.

This move represents a “buy-low” opportunity for the Mariners, similar to their successful acquisition of Victor Robles last year. Robles, also a former top prospect who had struggled before joining Seattle, thrived after the change of scenery. The Mariners are hoping for a similar turnaround from Taveras, who is under team control through arbitration for two more seasons after this one.

The acquisition does come with a financial commitment. Taveras is owed approximately $3.7 million for the remainder of the 2025 season. While a significant amount for a reserve player, the Mariners clearly see his potential to fill a need in their outfield, particularly with both Victor Robles (dislocated shoulder) and Luke Raley (oblique strain) currently sidelined.

The Rangers, meanwhile, are aiming to get under the competitive balance tax threshold. Shedding Taveras’ salary helps them achieve that goal. The move also allows the Mariners to potentially provide depth in their outfield and experiment with platoon matchups, given Taveras’ switch-hitting ability and superior performance from the left side of the plate.

The Mariners’ decision to DFA Castillo, a relatively unproven pitcher, indicates their willingness to prioritize bolstering their outfield. While Castillo has shown promise in the minors and in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, the team apparently views Taveras’ addition as a higher priority at this time.
