Wed May 07 18:18:06 UTC 2025: **Sudan’s Port Sudan Under Renewed Drone Attack; Humanitarian Crisis Worsens**
Port Sudan, Sudan (May 7, 2025) – Sudan’s crucial port city of Port Sudan came under renewed drone attack on Wednesday, marking the fourth consecutive day of strikes targeting the army-backed government’s stronghold. The attack, targeting the Flamingo naval base, follows Tuesday’s strikes on the main port, power station, and airport. A separate drone attack also targeted Kassala in eastern Sudan.
The Sudanese army, which blames the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group for the attacks, responded with anti-aircraft fire. The government recently severed ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), accusing it of supplying weapons to the RSF. The UAE denies these accusations.
The ongoing attacks on Port Sudan, a vital hub for humanitarian aid, have raised serious concerns about the delivery of assistance to millions in need. UN relief chief Tom Fletcher expressed deep concern, highlighting Port Sudan’s importance as a lifeline for humanitarian operations in a country already grappling with the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. The attacks have also disrupted essential services, including clean water and oxygen supplies, as evidenced by reports from Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in the River Nile state.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has already claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced 13 million. The fighting has effectively divided the country, with the army controlling the center, north, and east, while the RSF holds much of Darfur and parts of the south. The escalating violence and the disruption of aid delivery threaten to further exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation, with famine already declared in some areas and nearly 25 million facing severe food insecurity.
