Tue May 06 10:24:22 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Museum Exhibit Unveils India’s Maritime History with Southeast Asia
**CHENNAI, INDIA (May 6, 2025)** — A new art exhibition at the DakshinaChitra Museum in Chennai is shedding light on a largely untold chapter of Indian history: its vibrant maritime connections with Southeast Asia. “Echoes of the Coromandel,” developed by ten interns, showcases the significant cultural and commercial exchange that flourished between the two regions centuries ago.
The exhibition challenges traditional narratives that focus solely on the West’s interaction with India, highlighting India’s role as a significant trading partner for Southeast Asia. Using archaeological findings, literary sources like Sangam verses, and traditional navigation techniques, the exhibit charts this trans-oceanic connection across three thematic sections: The Beginning, The Peak, and The Echoes.
Visitors can explore handcrafted replicas of coins and pottery, navigational charts, and a documentary featuring modern-day fishermen detailing traditional shipbuilding and sailing methods. The exhibition also highlights the lasting cultural impact of this trade, showcasing similarities in temple architecture, language, and mythology across borders. Examples include the towering statue of Lord Murugan in Malaysia and the prevalence of Ramayana-themed leather puppets.
“Echoes of the Coromandel” is on view until May 18th. The museum is also hosting “Four Aesthetics,” another art exhibition showcasing diverse art forms and styles, which runs until May 11th.
