DHARAMSALA, INDIA – The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) suffered a 37-run defeat against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the HPCA stadium in Dharamsala, dropping to 7th place in the IPL 2025 standings. The loss was largely attributed to a top-order collapse and another disappointing performance from captain Rishabh Pant, who continues to struggle with his form.
Despite a fighting 74 from Ayush Badoni, LSG fell short of PBKS’s 237-run target, managing only 199/7. Pant’s early dismissal, coupled with the early exits of Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, and Nicholas Pooran, left LSG needing a substantial middle-order contribution which ultimately didn’t materialize. The team’s poor fielding also contributed to the defeat, according to Pant’s post-match analysis.
Owner Sanjiv Goenka, known for his high expectations, visibly expressed his displeasure at Pant’s continued underperformance. Pant, purchased for a record INR 27 crore last year, has yet to live up to the hefty price tag.
Pant attributed the loss to poor fielding and admitted the team needed to chase scores more effectively, indicating a need for greater contributions from the middle order. He stated the team’s playoff hopes remain alive, however, claiming they can turn things around with wins in their remaining matches.
The victory propelled Punjab Kings to second place in the points table, while the disappointing performance leaves Lucknow Super Giants facing an uphill battle to secure a playoff spot.
