Mon May 05 18:05:37 UTC 2025: ## Romanian Prime Minister Resigns After Far-Right Candidate Wins Presidential Election First Round
**Bucharest, Romania** – Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu resigned on Monday, a day after the far-right eurosceptic George Simion secured a decisive victory in the first round of the presidential election rerun. Simion, who garnered approximately 41% of the vote, will face independent centrist Nicusor Dan in a May 18 runoff. Ciolacu’s pro-EU coalition candidate, Crin Antonescu, failed to advance.
The resignation triggered the collapse of the governing coalition, comprised of Ciolacu’s Social Democratic Party (PSD), the centrist Liberals, and the ethnic Hungarian UDMR. Ciolacu stated that the coalition’s failure to secure a presidential victory rendered it illegitimate. Cabinet ministers will remain in an interim capacity until a new government is formed following the runoff.
Simion’s strong showing reflects growing public discontent over high living costs and security concerns. His Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) party, along with other far-right groups, holds significant power in parliament, holding more than a third of the seats. Simion has openly aligned himself with the “MAGA” movement and has expressed intentions to appoint Calin Georgescu, a previously banned far-right figure, as prime minister if he wins the presidency.
Analysts warn that a Simion victory could isolate Romania internationally, negatively impact private investment, and destabilize NATO’s eastern flank. His eurosceptic stance also adds to concerns about the growing influence of such leaders within the European Union. Romania’s already substantial budget deficit and risk of a credit downgrade further complicate the political situation. The presidential election rerun itself follows a previous attempt cancelled due to alleged Russian interference.
