Tue May 06 00:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Met Gala 2024: A Celebration of Black Style and Dandyism
**New York, NY** – The Met Gala, fashion’s biggest night, returned to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this year celebrating the new exhibition “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” The event, known for its extravagant displays of wealth and often criticized for its tone-deafness, took on a powerful new meaning with its focus on Black contributions to fashion.
Co-chaired by ASAP Rocky, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and Colman Domingo, with LeBron James as honorary chair, the gala saw a diverse array of Black talent grace the red carpet. The “tailored for you” dress code encouraged multi-dimensional looks, a refreshing change from previous years’ often-absurd costuming. Guests included Shaboozey, Sabrina Carpenter, Diana Ross, Bad Bunny, and many others. Individual tickets started at $75,000, with tables costing $350,000, all proceeds benefiting the Costume Institute. Sponsors included Louis Vuitton, Instagram, Africa Fashion International, Tyler Perry, and Condé Nast.
This year’s gala held special significance, serving as a poignant tribute to the late André Leon Talley, the iconic Vogue editor. Anna Wintour, the gala’s longtime organizer, shared that she imagined Talley, known for his flamboyant style, at the top of the steps, enjoying the celebration.
The event featured a captivating array of styles. Singer Diljit Dosanjh, the first Punjabi musician to perform at Coachella, made his Met Gala debut in a Prabal Gurung sherwani inspired by the Maharaja of Patiala, complete with custom-made jewelry reminiscent of the Maharaja’s famed 1,000-carat Cartier necklace. Other notable looks included Shakira’s voluminous pink Prabal Gurung gown, requiring six assistants to manage, and Keke Palmer’s structured white Vera Wang dress. Painter Jordan Casteel wore a Charles Elliot Harbison creation, a two-piece ensemble she described as Afro-futurism, paired with a necklace from her grandmother, the first Black woman on the Met’s board. Tramell Tillman, star of “Severance,” chose a Thom Browne pinstriped velvet tailcoat embellished with over 18,000 hand-embroidered beads, inspired by a 1919 play. Shah Rukh Khan, in his Met Gala debut, opted for a simple yet elegant Sabyasachi Mukherjee court jacket.
The gala also saw protests near several hotels hosting attendees, with union members demonstrating against the Surrey Hotel’s decision not to rehire staff after reopening. Despite the protests and the considerable price tag, the 2024 Met Gala showcased the power of fashion as a form of self-expression, cultural celebration, and social commentary, leaving a lasting impression with its homage to Black style and the legacy of André Leon Talley.
