Tue May 06 15:30:00 UTC 2025: **Texas and Louisiana Brace for Devastating Severe Weather; Tornado Watch Issued**
DALLAS, TX – May 6, 2025 – Millions across Texas and Louisiana are facing a multi-day severe weather threat, with the potential for baseball-sized hail, strong tornadoes, and life-threatening flash floods. A Tornado Watch, affecting over 10 million people including Houston, Waco, and Austin, is in effect until 4 p.m. CT.
The severe weather follows a night of intense storms and a search for a 10-year-old girl swept away by floodwaters in Brenham. First responders also battled a lightning-caused house fire.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a Level 2 severe weather risk (out of 5) for a large area, encompassing major cities like Houston, Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin. A Level 3 risk, indicating the highest likelihood of severe weather, is in place for Beaumont, College Station, and other cities. The threat includes the possibility of EF-2 or higher tornadoes.
Flash flooding poses a significant danger, particularly in East Texas and Louisiana, where a Level 3 out of 4 flash flood threat has been issued. Southern Louisiana and Mississippi could see 5-8 inches of rain, with isolated areas experiencing even higher totals. The heavy rain will continue into Wednesday, impacting areas along the Gulf Coast and potentially extending into the Florida Panhandle.
