Mon May 05 18:21:07 UTC 2025: ## Congress to Address Debts of Deceased Party Functionary in Kerala

**Kozhikode, May 5, 2025** – The Indian National Congress is stepping in to resolve the significant debt burden left behind by deceased party functionary N.M. Vijayan. Vijayan, treasurer of the Wayanad District Congress Committee, and his son, died in December 2024 following an alleged suicide attempt. The family alleges that Vijayan accumulated over ₹2.5 crore in debt due to pressure from party leaders, including involvement in a suspected job scam and fundraising activities.

Despite earlier promises of support, the family claims to have received only ₹10 lakh. Following reports that they were denied a meeting with Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi, the family brought their plight to the media.

The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee has responded by appointing a four-member committee, headed by senior leaders Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, T.N. Prathapan, Sunny Joseph, and K. Jayanth, to investigate the matter and address the outstanding debts. Wayanad DCC president N.D. Appachan, one of those accused in the alleged job scam, stated that the party would settle some of the debts, particularly those secured against the family’s property. The situation highlights internal tensions within the Congress party and raises concerns about the financial pressures faced by some party workers.
