Mon May 05 02:43:15 UTC 2025: ## UN Security Council to Hold Closed Consultations on India-Pakistan Tensions

**New York, May 5, 2025** – The UN Security Council will hold closed consultations today on the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, following a request from Islamabad for an emergency meeting. The request comes in the wake of the April 22nd Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians.

Pakistan, currently a non-permanent member of the Security Council, cited the evolving situation as a threat to regional and international peace and security. The Greek Presidency of the Council, which scheduled the meeting for this afternoon, has stated that it believes such a discussion is necessary to potentially de-escalate tensions.

While Pakistan maintains its right to convene such a meeting, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has already spoken with all Security Council members except China and Pakistan, emphasizing the need to bring the perpetrators of the Pahalgam attack to justice. He highlighted India’s strong strategic partnership with Greece and welcomed their condemnation of cross-border terrorism.

The Greek presidency has expressed its strong condemnation of terrorism in all its forms and offered condolences to India, Nepal and the victims’ families. They acknowledge the significant disparity in size and power between India and Pakistan and the seriousness of the current tensions.

The closed-door consultations will involve the five permanent members (China, France, Russia, the UK, and the US) and the ten non-permanent members, including Pakistan. The outcome of the consultations remains to be seen, but the meeting underscores the gravity of the situation and the international concern surrounding the India-Pakistan conflict.
