**Beijing, May 5, 2025** – A sudden storm caused four boats to capsize on the Wu River in Guizhou province, southwestern China, resulting in nine deaths and one person still missing, according to state media. The incident occurred Sunday afternoon during a national holiday, when strong winds and hail hit the popular tourist area. More than 80 people were thrown into the river when the boats overturned.
Initially, reports indicated only two boats were involved, but CCTV and Xinhua News Agency later confirmed four. While two boats reportedly carried approximately 40 passengers each and were not overloaded, it remains unclear if the other two vessels also had passengers on board.
Video footage shows rescue efforts underway, including CPR being administered. Eyewitnesses described the storm as sudden and intense, with thick mist hindering visibility. Some passengers managed to swim to safety despite the deep water.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has demanded “all-out efforts” to locate the missing and provide care for the injured. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in improving safety standards within China’s transportation sector, despite government efforts to reduce accidents.
