Mon May 05 07:10:24 UTC 2025: ## Xi Orders Safety Overhaul After Deadly China Boat Capsizing
**Beijing, China** – President Xi Jinping has ordered a nationwide strengthening of safety measures for tourism and public events following a string of recent fatal incidents, the most recent being a deadly boat capsizing in southwestern China.
Ten people died and 70 were injured on Sunday when a sudden hailstorm capsized four boats on the Wu River near Qianxi City, Guizhou province. Over 80 people were thrown into the water during the intense storm, which struck unexpectedly, reducing visibility significantly. While initial reports suggested two tourist boats were involved, state broadcaster CCTV later confirmed four vessels capsized, two of which were unoccupied at the time. Rescue operations involved approximately 500 emergency personnel and continued overnight.
The incident occurred during the busy May Day holiday period, which saw a surge in domestic tourism, overwhelming many destinations across the country. Although reports indicate the boats were not overloaded, each having a capacity of 40 passengers, the tragedy has highlighted concerns about safety protocols during peak tourist seasons.
Following the incident, President Xi Jinping demanded “all-out efforts” in rescue operations and the treatment of the injured. He emphasized the urgent need to improve safety measures at tourist attractions and other large public venues nationwide, citing a recent rise in fatal incidents across China. The Wu River, a popular tourist spot, is a tributary of the Yangtze River and particularly busy during holiday periods.
