Mon May 05 06:34:05 UTC 2025: **West Bengal CM Downplays Governor’s Report on Murshidabad Riots, Asserts Stability**

Kolkata, May 5, 2025 – West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee dismissed Governor C.V. Ananda Bose’s report to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on the recent Murshidabad riots, stating she lacked knowledge of its contents, including the Governor’s suggestion of potentially invoking Article 356 (President’s Rule). Banerjee, who embarked on a two-day visit to Murshidabad on Monday, attributed the delay to prioritizing the restoration of peace and stability in the region, which she claims has been achieved.

The Governor’s report, however, paints a far more serious picture, describing a “twin spectre of radicalisation and militancy” and suggesting the riots were premeditated. It alleges the state government was aware of the impending threat and recommends several measures, including an inquiry commission and increased central forces presence in border districts. The report also notes the possibility of implementing Article 356. At least three people died in the riots, which erupted amidst protests against the anti-Waqf (Amendment) Act.

While dismissing the Governor’s concerns, Chief Minister Banerjee affirmed her party’s commitment to national security, citing their cooperation with the central government following a recent terror attack in Pahalgam. She plans to hold a district review meeting and distribute compensation to victims in Murshidabad.
