Tue Apr 15 07:56:58 UTC 2025: ## Renowned Science Advocate and Author Ranjit Nair Passes Away at 70

**New Delhi, April 15, 2025** – Dr. Ranjit Nair, a distinguished intellectual and founder of the Centre for Philosophy and Foundations of Science (CPFS), passed away on April 14th at the age of 70 due to a cardiac arrest. Dr. Nair, a passionate advocate for science popularization, dedicated his life to bringing leading scientists to India.

His efforts through the CPFS brought world-renowned figures such as Stephen Hawking and Nobel laureate Roger Penrose to lecture in India. These events were largely facilitated by Dr. Nair’s extensive network developed during his time in the UK. Beyond his organizational work, Dr. Nair was also a prolific writer, with published works including “Mind, Matter and Mystery” and “The Republic of Science.” He also edited the collected works of the acclaimed physicist E.C.G. Sudarshan.

Dr. Nair’s contributions extended to championing Indian science and history. He played a pivotal role in securing a bust of Jagadish Chandra Bose for Christ College, Cambridge, his alma mater. His passion for science began during his undergraduate years at University College, Trivandrum, where he was instrumental in establishing the student-run Science Society. This society included notable figures such as the late astrophysicist Thanu Padmanabhan.

Dr. Nair’s legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments. K. Vijay Raghavan, biologist and former Principal Scientific Advisor, described him as “indefatigable” in his commitment to science dissemination. Even earlier this month, he hosted an online discussion with Dr. Penrose on “Cosmic Conundrums.”

Dr. Nair is survived by his wife, noted poet and linguist Rukmini Bhaya Nair, his daughter Professor Vijayanka Nair, son Viraj Nair, and other family members. His passing marks a significant loss for the scientific community in India and abroad.
