Mon May 05 01:59:42 UTC 2025: ## India-Pakistan Tensions Flare After Pahalgam Attack
**New Delhi, May 5, 2025** – Tensions between India and Pakistan escalated sharply following a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives on April 22nd. The Indian Army reported multiple instances of unprovoked small arms fire from across the Line of Control (LoC) overnight into May 5th, targeting areas in Kupwara, Baramulla, Poonch, Rajauri, Mendhar, Naushera, Sunderbani, and Akhnoor. The Indian Army responded with proportionate countermeasures.
Pakistan’s ambassador to Moscow has appealed to Russia for assistance in de-escalating the crisis. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged both India and Pakistan to de-escalate the situation, referencing the 1972 Simla Accord and 1999 Lahore Declaration as frameworks for bilateral resolution. He spoke with both External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar. Dar rejected India’s accusations against Pakistan as “baseless allegations and inflammatory rhetoric.”
Adding to the heightened atmosphere, India’s Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 4th to discuss the escalating situation. The ongoing tensions have raised concerns about regional stability and the potential implications for the Indus Waters Treaty.
