Mon May 05 06:37:39 UTC 2025: ## Thousands Protest Waqf Amendment Act in Kalaburagi

**Kalaburagi, Karnataka, May 5, 2025** – Tens of thousands of people, primarily from the Muslim community, participated in a massive peaceful protest in Kalaburagi on May 4th, vehemently opposing the recently enacted Waqf Amendment Act, 2025. The demonstration, organized by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), drew a diverse coalition of participants, including political leaders, civil society groups, Dalit organizations, and religious leaders from various faiths – a rare show of interfaith solidarity.

The six-hour protest, held at Peer Bangali Ground, featured speeches condemning the Act as unconstitutional and anti-minority. CPI General Secretary D. Raja, a petitioner challenging the Act in the Supreme Court, called it a threat to India’s secularism and urged the removal of the BJP government. CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat warned of the potential for widespread land dispossession, affecting not only Muslims but also farmers and the poor. Speakers highlighted the Act’s violation of Articles 25 and 26 of the Indian Constitution.

The event included a moment of silence to honor victims of a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Prominent attendees included several political figures, religious leaders from various faiths, and representatives from numerous organizations. The protest underscored widespread concerns about the Act’s impact on the autonomy of Waqf institutions and the potential for increased state control over Waqf properties.
