Sun May 04 20:18:36 UTC 2025: ## Delhi Slum Residents Protest Relocation to Narela

**New Delhi, May 5, 2025** – Hundreds of residents of Madrasi camp, an unauthorized slum colony in Jangpura, Delhi, are protesting their forced relocation to Narela, a location 40 kilometers away. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) issued demolition notices earlier this month, offering alternative flats in Narela as compensation.

Residents cite several concerns, including a lack of adequate public transportation, insufficient schools, and safety worries. They claim that Narela has higher crime rates, including theft, molestation, and murder. The relocation would also cause significant financial hardship, as the daily commute cost would consume a large portion of their already meager incomes. Many residents work in nearby government offices and depend on easily accessible schools for their children.

The relocation contradicts an election promise by the BJP to provide pucca houses (permanent homes) under the Jahan Jhuggi Waha Makan scheme. Residents claim that despite this promise, no effort has been made to provide housing near their current location.

Further fueling the residents’ anger is the fact that some shanties were demolished last year without notice during Barapullah drain cleaning, despite assurances from the Aam Aadmi Party government that no further demolitions would occur due to civic works. The current situation has left residents feeling betrayed and facing an uncertain future. The protest continues as residents demand a fair and viable solution.
