Fri May 02 13:36:16 UTC 2025: ## India and UK Resume FTA Talks in London
**London, May 2, 2025** – India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal unexpectedly returned to London today to resume stalled free trade agreement (FTA) talks with his British counterpart, Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds. The talks, which began in January 2022, had concluded earlier this week without a final agreement.
A British government spokesperson confirmed Mr. Goyal’s return, following a two-day visit that ended without a breakthrough. While both governments described earlier discussions as “constructive,” sources familiar with the negotiations indicated that only a few outstanding issues remained on Tuesday. Reportedly, agreements have been reached on reducing tariffs for whisky and automobiles.
The FTA negotiations, initiated after Britain’s exit from the European Union, have faced delays due to political instability in the UK, including four Prime Ministers since their commencement. The current Labour government had seemed poised to finalize the deal shortly. Beyond the FTA, India and Britain are also pursuing separate agreements on investment and social security.
