Mon May 05 01:12:11 UTC 2025: ## India to Expand Border Security Force by 17,000 Troops

**New Delhi, May 5, 2025** – The Border Security Force (BSF) is poised to significantly bolster its ranks with the imminent approval of 16 new battalions, adding approximately 17,000 personnel to its ranks. This expansion, following in-principle government approval, comes in response to heightened security concerns along the India-Pakistan and India-Bangladesh borders.

The decision follows the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government in Bangladesh last year and the recent Pahalgam massacre in Pakistan. The additional troops will strengthen the BSF’s capabilities to patrol and secure the 6,726 km border, including the challenging unfenced areas.

Along with the troop increase, the Union Home Ministry has approved the establishment of two new forward headquarters. One will be located in Jammu to enhance security along the India-Pakistan border, and the other in Mizoram to improve surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border.

The BSF currently has 193 battalions and will undertake recruitment and training over the next five to six years to fill the new positions. The expansion is part of a larger proposal submitted a few years ago, requesting 20-21 new battalions due to evolving security dynamics. While the government approved a slightly smaller expansion, the addition of 17,000 personnel represents a substantial boost to the force’s manpower. The additional battalions will be crucial in maintaining security and addressing the challenges presented by the complex terrain of the border regions.
