Mon May 05 16:30:00 UTC 2025: **High Court Dismisses Plea for CBI Probe into Rahul Gandhi’s Citizenship**

**Lucknow, May 5, 2025** – The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court today dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the citizenship of Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi. The court allowed the petitioner, S. Vignesh Shishir, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to pursue the matter through other appropriate channels.

The PIL, filed by Shishir, alleged that Mr. Gandhi holds British citizenship and requested the cancellation of his Lok Sabha membership and electoral certificate. While the court acknowledged the petitioner’s complaint, it stated that he lacked the standing to demand the cancellation of Mr. Gandhi’s membership.

The court’s decision follows a submission by the Deputy Solicitor General, who informed the court that the Ministry of Home Affairs had contacted the UK government seeking information regarding Mr. Gandhi’s alleged British citizenship. However, the government’s inability to provide a timeframe for resolving the complaint led the court to deem further proceedings unnecessary.

The High Court’s dismissal effectively ends this particular legal challenge to Mr. Gandhi’s citizenship, leaving the matter for potential future action through alternative avenues. A detailed order from the court is pending.
