**CHENNAI, May 3, 2025** – Mano Bakthavatsalam, a long-time Chennai resident, respected Carnatic music connoisseur, and dedicated social activist, passed away on Friday at the age of 95. Ms. Bakthavatsalam, born in 1929, was a prominent figure in Chennai’s cultural and social landscape, leaving behind a legacy of service and dedication.
Educated at St. Rafael’s School and Queen Mary’s College, she followed her father’s advice to pursue voluntary work, becoming involved in numerous organizations throughout her life. These included the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, the Women’s Voluntary Service of Tamil Nadu, and the NKT National Girls Higher Secondary School, where she served as correspondent and secretary. She also held vice-president positions at the Srinivasa Gandhi Nilayam and the University Women’s Association of Madras. Her contributions were recognized with the prestigious Margarette Golding Award from the International Inner Wheel.
According to her son, Vijay, Ms. Bakthavatsalam remained active well into her 80s, even driving herself to her various engagements. A member of The Music Academy’s committee, she was known for her enthusiastic involvement in service organizations, always working quietly and without seeking recognition.
Historian V. Sriram, a longtime acquaintance, echoed this sentiment, highlighting her dedication and unassuming nature. Ms. Bakthavatsalam is survived by her two sons and their families.
