Fri May 02 17:28:24 UTC 2025: ## World’s Largest Electric Ship Launched in Tasmania

**Hobart, Tasmania –** Incat, an Australian boatbuilder, launched the world’s largest electric-powered ship on Friday. The 130-meter (426-foot) aluminum catamaran, named Hull 096, boasts a battery capacity of over 250 tons and can carry 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles. Built for South American ferry operator Buquebus, the vessel will operate across the River Plate between Buenos Aires and Uruguay.

Incat CEO Stephen Casey hailed the launch as proof that large-scale, low-emission transport is achievable. The ship’s substantial energy storage system, supplied by Wartsila, provides over 40 megawatt-hours of capacity, powering eight electric waterjets.

The launch is significant given the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) efforts to curb maritime emissions, which account for nearly 3% of global greenhouse gases. While the IMO recently voted for a global pricing system to incentivize greener fuels by 2028, environmental concerns remain about potential drawbacks of biofuels. Hull 096, originally intended to run on LNG, represents a substantial step towards a more sustainable shipping future. Wartsila’s Marine President Roger Holm emphasized the crucial role ferries play in meeting growing demand for eco-friendly transport.
