**UNITED NATIONS** – Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad issued a stark warning Friday, claiming India poses an imminent threat of military action against his country. He urged increased international intervention to de-escalate the rapidly deteriorating situation, stemming from a recent terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir.
Ahmad reiterated Pakistan’s stance that India withholding Indus River waters would be considered an act of war, prompting a retaliatory response to defend its sovereignty. He hinted at convening a UN Security Council meeting if the escalating tensions continue. While acknowledging limited success in garnering international support, he emphasized the need for “preventive diplomacy and dialogue.”
The heightened tensions follow a terrorist attack in Pahalgam last month claimed by The Resistance Front, a group linked to the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba. Pakistan denies any involvement, expressing concern over the loss of life. However, Ambassador Ahmad sidestepped questions regarding Pakistan’s historical links to terrorism, including the 2008 Mumbai attacks and the presence of known terrorists within Pakistan.
While Pakistan has engaged with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who has also spoken with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, India maintains its opposition to third-party involvement, citing the 1972 Simla Agreement. India’s engagement has been limited to discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Ambassador Ahmad’s claim of imminent attack, however, lacked specific evidence. He stated that Pakistan does not seek escalation but is prepared to defend its territorial integrity. The situation remains highly volatile, raising serious concerns about the potential for a wider conflict.
