**New Delhi, May 3, 2025** – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has strongly condemned the alleged “ruthless campaign of state-sponsored terrorism” against the Baloch people in Pakistan. In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Mr. Sarma detailed instances of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, and torture inflicted upon Baloch activists, students, and intellectuals by Pakistani authorities.
Mr. Sarma’s statement follows recent heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, stemming from a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that India attributes to Pakistan-based terrorists. He highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 2016 Independence Day address, where the Prime Minister voiced support for the Baloch people, referencing the “rivers of red” flowing through Balochistan as a symbol of the ongoing violence. This support, Mr. Sarma emphasized, came in response to a series of terror attacks in Kashmir that year, including those in Pathankot and Uri.
The Assam Chief Minister’s comments represent the latest in a series of official-level exchanges between India and Pakistan. Mr. Sarma has recently been vocal in criticizing statements perceived as detrimental to India’s security interests, notably his March criticism of remarks made by Bangladesh’s interim government chief advisor. His statement on Balochistan underscores India’s continued concern over the human rights situation in the region and its unwavering support for the Baloch liberation movement.
