**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, May 3, 2025** – A new art gallery dedicated to showcasing Madurai’s rich artistic heritage opened its doors on Friday. The Andril Heritage Art Gallery, located at V.S. Chellam Century Hall, was inaugurated by Thiagarajar College president Uma Kannan.
The gallery aims to celebrate Madurai’s historical artistic traditions, highlighting its status as the “heritage capital” of Tamil Nadu. According to P. Rajesh Kanna of Andril Heritage Art Gallery, the city historically even possessed a street dedicated to artists, underscoring the deep-rooted artistic culture.
The gallery features various sections dedicated to themes such as natural heritage, intangible heritage, festivals, folk arts, and Sangam literature. The name “Andril” is inspired by the Ibis bird, a symbol of love mentioned in Sangam literature. The gallery provides an immersive experience through visual art, with dedicated spaces for art collectors and enthusiasts.
Kanna emphasized that the gallery is more than just an exhibition; it serves as a platform to preserve and promote Madurai’s cultural richness, support local artists, and pay tribute to the city’s artistic legacy. The gallery’s exhibits aim to bring to light the unsung heroes of Madurai’s artistic traditions.
