**New York, May 3, 2025** – A six-foot section of wall featuring Banksy’s iconic heart-shaped balloon artwork, which became the unlikely canvas for a graffiti battle, is set to go up for auction. The piece, now titled “Battle to Survive a Broken Heart,” shows not only Banksy’s original work but also subsequent tags from rival artists, creating a unique visual record of a street art clash.
The artwork, originally spray-painted on a Brooklyn warehouse in 2013, immediately attracted attention. Soon after Banksy’s creation, an artist known only as “Omar NYC” added their tag. This sparked a series of retaliatory tags, including a response seemingly from Banksy himself, and an attempt by another artist thwarted by security.
Maria Georgiadis, whose family owned the warehouse, salvaged the wall section before demolition. She describes the resulting graffiti as quintessentially New York, a testament to the city’s vibrant—and sometimes competitive—street art scene. The piece will be auctioned by Guernsey’s in New York on May 21.
