Thu May 01 16:23:09 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Police Launches State-of-the-Art Virtual Witness Room

**Chennai, May 2, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Police (GCP) has launched a pilot “virtual witness room” equipped with advanced video conferencing technology, marking a significant step towards modernizing the police-judicial system in Tamil Nadu. The facility, inaugurated Thursday by Additional Commissioner of Police Vijayendra Bidari, allows investigating officers to provide evidence in court proceedings across the state without needing to travel.

The high-tech room features high-definition video conferencing equipment, audio-video recording and archiving systems, a document visualiser, and soundproofing to ensure privacy and confidentiality. This initiative is in line with Sections 254(1) to (3) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which allows for the recording of prosecution evidence via electronic means. The Madras High Court has already mandated the acceptance of such depositions from designated witness rooms.

Police officials expect the virtual witness room to expedite trials and increase police productivity by minimizing travel time and administrative burdens. The pilot program is seen as a major advancement in digitizing the interaction between police and the judiciary.
