Thu May 01 22:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Journalism Favored, But Can It Win? 2025 Kentucky Derby Preview
**Louisville, KY** – The 151st Kentucky Derby is set for Saturday, May 3rd, at 6:57 p.m. ET, with Journalism entering as the morning-line favorite at 3-1 odds. However, the last morning-line favorite to win was Justify in 2018, casting doubt on Journalism’s chances.
Twenty horses will compete for the $3.1 million winner’s purse (part of a $5 million total purse), with a field that includes a horse owned by the estate of late country music star Toby Keith, fulfilling his lifelong dream. The race, held at Churchill Downs, will see a significant change in the field after Rodriguez, trained by Bob Baffert, was scratched due to injury and replaced by Baeza. Baffert’s return marks his first involvement since a three-year ban for a doping violation in 2021.
Early-week storms could impact track conditions, although partly cloudy skies with a high of 67 degrees are forecast for race day. Post position, historically significant, also plays a role, with no horse ever winning from the No. 17 post.
NBC will provide extensive coverage beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET, with Peacock streaming coverage starting at noon ET. The race will mark NBC’s 25th year broadcasting the event.
