Fri May 02 08:40:00 UTC 2025: **India Launches Subsidized Postal Service for Educational Materials**

NEW DELHI, April 29, 2025 – The Indian Department of Posts launched “Gyan Post,” a new postal service offering discounted rates for the transportation of educational materials, Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced Monday. The initiative aims to make educational resources more accessible and affordable.

Gyan Post will offer rates ranging from ₹20 to ₹100 for packages weighing up to 300 grams and 5 kilograms, respectively. Eligible materials include textbooks prescribed by state and central government education boards and universities. Unlike the existing book post service, Gyan Post will provide real-time tracking.

While the Department of Posts seeks profitability, Minister Scindia emphasized that Gyan Post is a social initiative contributing to education and will not be subject to profit targets. The service will begin on May 1st. Although individual lightweight textbooks may cost slightly more than under the book post system, larger packages (up to 5kg) will be significantly cheaper. Materials related to social, cultural, and religious matters, published in accordance with Indian law, are also eligible.
