**Santiago, Chile – May 2, 2025** – A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Drake Passage between Cape Horn and Antarctica on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake, which occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, triggered an evacuation alert for the entire coastal section of the Strait of Magellan in southern Chile.

Chile’s National Disaster Prevention and Response Service is currently assessing the extent of the damage. Further details regarding casualties and infrastructure damage are pending. The earthquake was felt in both Chile and Argentina.
