**Madurai, Tamil Nadu, May 1, 2025** – Villagers in Kambur, Madurai district, passed a resolution at a gram sabha meeting Thursday demanding the inclusion of all agricultural work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). The meeting was also dominated by calls for the closure of all Tasmac liquor shops in the area.
Residents cited a shortage of farm laborers and argued that incorporating all agricultural tasks into the MGNREGS would benefit both farmers and workers. K. Selvaraj, a Kambur resident, stated that this would ensure sufficient manpower for farmers while providing employment opportunities for the villagers. Concerns were also raised about timely and accurate wage payments under the scheme.
Further grievances included irregularities in the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission, unnecessary taxation, and the detrimental effects of alcohol addiction among youth due to readily available liquor. Villagers demanded the closure of all Tasmac shops and action against illicit liquor sellers.
Other issues raised included addressing drinking water problems, closing unused wells, and removing encroachments. Over 200 people and representatives from various departments attended the gram sabha meeting.
