Thu May 01 14:30:00 UTC 2025: **Indy Juneteenth Parade Cancelled, Festival to Proceed at State Fairgrounds**
INDIANAPOLIS – The Indy Juneteenth parade, a highly anticipated annual event, has been cancelled for 2025 due to scheduling conflicts and difficulties securing a parade route from the City of Indianapolis. Despite this setback, organizers announced plans for a vibrant Juneteenth festival at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on June 21st.
According to James Webb, co-founder and executive director of Indy Juneteenth, months of negotiations with the city failed to produce a suitable location for the parade. Initial requests for a permit and route along Indiana Avenue, similar to previous years, were met with delays. A proposed alternative route down Massachusetts Avenue also proved unfeasible due to pre-existing event permits. The city ultimately offered Indiana Avenue again, but with stipulations that proved too difficult to meet in the limited timeframe available.
“We normally have this stuff done by November or December,” Webb explained, highlighting the challenges of organizing the parade in a drastically shortened timeframe. While disappointed, Webb expressed excitement about the future, emphasizing the newly formed partnership with the Indiana State Fairgrounds. Next year’s parade will be held at the fairgrounds.
The June 21st festival will feature live performances from artists originally slated for the parade, a wellness circle, a sip and paint event, over 30 food vendors, and over 100 small business vendors. Additional Juneteenth events, including a pageant, college and career conference, a boxing showcase, and a fireworks show, are also planned throughout the month.
A spokesperson for the Indianapolis Department of Business and Neighborhood Services acknowledged the difficulties faced by Indy Juneteenth organizers and expressed understanding for the cancellation of the parade.
