**Burlington, VT – May 1, 2025** – A Vermont judge released Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian student activist at Columbia University, on Wednesday, April 30th, after he was arrested by immigration officials during a citizenship interview. Mahdawi, a legal permanent resident for 10 years, had been detained since April 14th for leading protests against Israel’s war in Gaza.
Judge Geoffrey Crawford ruled that Mahdawi’s arrest was an attempt to suppress his speech, protected under the First Amendment. While the government argued Mahdawi posed a national security threat, citing a since-discredited 2015 FBI investigation, the judge deemed this insufficient to justify detention. The government’s claim that Mahdawi’s presence threatened U.S. foreign policy interests was also rejected.
Mahdawi’s case is one of many involving the detention and deportation of pro-Palestinian students since the start of the Trump administration. Fellow student Mahmoud Khalil remains detained, having missed the birth of his child, and Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk was also detained for an op-ed. Over 1,000 college students nationwide have had their visas revoked or legal status terminated since late March, though the government has since announced a reversal for many after court challenges.
Mahdawi, who plans to attend his graduation next month, expressed defiance towards President Trump and his administration, emphasizing the importance of defending democracy and humanity. His release, however, is not guaranteed, as he faces an immigration hearing on May 1st in Louisiana. The US Attorney’s office has not yet indicated whether it will appeal the ruling. Columbia University issued a statement affirming everyone’s right to due process.
