**Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh – May 2, 2025** – A rare sighting of the European Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) in the Dhauladhar mountain range of Himachal Pradesh has excited scientists and conservationists. This marks the first documented appearance of this migratory species in India.
The butterfly was observed on April 22nd near Dharamshala at an elevation of 2,500 meters during a butterfly survey. Confirmation came from Lovish Garlani, a Himalayan butterfly expert with the Himachal Pradesh Forest Department, and Sanjeev Kumar, Range Forest Officer. The discovery brings the total number of documented butterfly species in Himachal Pradesh to 440.
The European Red Admiral is known for its wide migratory range across Europe and North America. While previously undocumented in India, historical records show its presence in parts of Central and South Asia. Its absence from China, Mongolia, and Afghanistan makes this sighting particularly significant, suggesting a possible eastward expansion of its range.
Experts believe the butterfly’s presence might be due to the availability of its primary food source, stinging nettle, and favorable climatic conditions in the Western Himalayas. However, further research is needed to determine whether this is an isolated event or signifies the establishment of a breeding population in the region.
The European Red Admiral can be distinguished from its Indian cousin by its narrower, deeper crimson band and a distinctive spot on its forewing. This discovery highlights the importance of continued butterfly conservation efforts in the Himalayas and underscores the need for further research into species distribution under changing environmental conditions.
