**LOS ANGELES** – A first look at A24’s upcoming biopic “The Smashing Machine” reveals Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in a stunning transformation as two-time UFC heavyweight champion Mark Kerr. The trailer, released Tuesday, showcases Johnson’s commitment to the role, which marks Benny Safdie’s solo directorial debut after his success with the Safdie brothers’ films “Uncut Gems” and “Good Time.”
The film, hitting theaters October 3rd, also stars Emily Blunt as Kerr’s wife, Dawn Staples, alongside Bas Rutten, Lyndsey Gavin, and Oleksandr Usyk. This marks Johnson and Blunt’s second collaboration following “Jungle Cruise,” and the pair are slated to reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio in a Scorsese-directed project.
“The Smashing Machine” delves into the life of Kerr, a decorated mixed martial artist (1997-2009), exploring both his athletic triumphs and his struggles with substance abuse and turbulent personal relationships, as previously documented in an HBO documentary of the same name.
Johnson has stated his desire to work with Safdie, praising the director’s commitment to raw and authentic storytelling. The actor highlighted his own ambition to push creative boundaries and take on roles that explore complex human experiences. The film is produced by Johnson, Safdie, Dany Garcia, Eli Bush, Hiram Garcia, and David Koplan, with Tracey Landon serving as executive producer.
