**Kozhikode, Kerala, India –** A six-year-old girl, Ziya Faris, succumbed to rabies on Tuesday at the Government Medical College Hospital (GMCH) in Kozhikode, Kerala, despite receiving the rabies vaccine after a dog bite a month prior.
Ziya was attacked by a stray dog on March 29th, suffering bites to her head and limbs. While she received the vaccine and treatment at GMCH, she developed a fever six days ago and subsequently tested positive for rabies. Despite treatment in the ICU, she passed away early Tuesday morning.
Ziya’s family alleges lapses in treatment at the hospital, a claim denied by GMCH authorities who maintain they followed proper protocol. Other individuals bitten by the same dog on the same day did not develop rabies. Doctors speculate that the bite to Ziya’s head may have contributed to the severity of the infection. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges posed by stray dogs and the need for effective rabies prevention and treatment in India.
