**Islamabad, Pakistan –** Pakistan is scrambling to secure its pharmaceutical supply chain following India’s suspension of all trade ties, a move triggered by the recent Pahalgam attack and the subsequent suspension of the Indus Water Treaty. The drastic action has left Pakistan facing potential shortages of essential medicines, including anti-cancer therapies, vaccines, and anti-venom serums, as it relies on India for 30-40% of its pharmaceutical raw materials and finished products.
According to Geo News, Pakistan’s Drug Regulatory Authority (DRAP) is working on contingency plans and seeking alternative sources from countries like China, Russia, and Europe. However, industry experts warn of significant challenges if immediate action isn’t taken. A senior official from the Ministry of National Health Services expressed concern, highlighting the reliance on India for crucial life-saving medications.
The situation is further complicated by the prevalence of a black market supplying unregistered medicines, many originating from India. While this offers a temporary solution, it poses serious risks regarding quality and consistent supply.
The Pakistan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (PPMA) has appealed to the government for an exemption from the trade ban, emphasizing the life-threatening consequences of disrupting the flow of essential pharmaceuticals. The PPMA has met with DRAP and the Ministry of Commerce to urge this exemption, highlighting the vital role of Indian-sourced raw materials in many life-saving products. The organization also approached the Special Investment Facilitation Council to make their case. Despite these efforts, the Ministry of Health has yet to issue an official statement clarifying the import status of pharmaceuticals.
