**Srinagar, April 29, 2025** – Following a significant political backlash, authorities in Kashmir have reportedly halted the demolition of houses belonging to suspected terrorists. The move comes after a joint condemnation from regional parties, including the ruling National Conference, protesting the demolitions and warning of increased alienation. While the demolitions have ceased, a major crackdown on terror supporters continues, with widespread raids and searches.
The halt in demolitions followed a Pahalgam terror attack on April 22nd that killed 26 civilians and injured 16. Over 10 houses linked to suspected terrorists from groups like Hizbul Mujahideen, Jaish-e-Muhammad, and Lashkar-e-Taiba were demolished in the aftermath. Three houses belonging to suspects identified in the Pahalgam attack were also razed. However, these actions sparked protests due to collateral damage to neighboring properties, particularly in Pulwama.
Despite the pause in demolitions, police conducted raids on the residences of 36 suspected terrorists in Srinagar and other areas, focusing on dismantling terror-supporting infrastructure. Searches also extended to the Chenab Valley, targeting individuals suspected of operating from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
Meanwhile, low-level skirmishes along the Line of Control (LoC) continued for a fourth consecutive day, with the Indian army reporting unprovoked small arms fire from Pakistan in Kupwara and Poonch districts. The Indian army responded effectively to this aggression.
A senior official stated that the central government is reviewing its demolition strategy in light of the regional parties’ concerns. The Ministry of Home Affairs has identified over 14 active terrorists following the Pahalgam attack.
