**Vienna, Austria –** A surge in counterfeit honey is prompting innovative solutions in Europe. Sinsoma, a small Austrian company, is employing DNA testing to identify adulterated honey, a practice increasingly prevalent in the honey market. The lab analyzes around 100 honey samples monthly, revealing the addition of water or inexpensive sugar syrups, practices forbidden under EU legislation.
An EU investigation between 2021 and 2022 found that 46% of honey entering the bloc was potentially adulterated, a significant increase from previous years. Chinese honey was implicated in 74% of these suspicious consignments. This prompted Austria’s health and food safety agency (AGES) to utilize DNA testing for the first time this year. Major supermarket chains, such as SPAR, are also adopting this technology to ensure the authenticity of their products.
The problem extends beyond consumer deception; it severely impacts beekeepers who struggle to compete with lower prices from imported, often blended, honeys. Matthias Kopetzky, a Viennese beekeeper, highlights the difficulty of competing in this adulterated market.
While the EU is a leading honey producer, it is also a major importer, largely from Ukraine, China, and Argentina. To combat this issue, the EU implemented a new directive requiring honey labels to specify the country of origin from mid-2026. Additionally, an expert group has been established to harmonize adulteration detection methods.
Sinsoma’s DNA testing method leverages the unique DNA profiles found in honey, revealing inconsistencies like an absence of diverse DNA traces or an unexpected high proportion of rice or corn DNA. This technology provides a more cost-effective alternative to traditional pollen analysis. While the method isn’t foolproof, it offers a crucial tool in the fight against honey fraud. The company acknowledges the need for standardization but emphasizes the urgency of action to stay ahead of counterfeiters.
