NEW DELHI, April 28, 2025 – The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections concluded late Sunday night with the Left Unity panel securing a majority, winning three out of four central panel posts. However, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), after a ten-year absence, made a significant comeback, winning the Joint Secretary post and claiming 24 out of 42 councillor positions.
Nitish Kumar (AISA) won the President’s post, while Manisha and Munteha (both DSF) secured the Vice-President and General Secretary positions, respectively. Vaibhav Meena of ABVP, the first from his party to win a central panel post in recent history, attributed his victory to a rise in tribal consciousness and nationalist ideology.
This year’s election saw a split within the Left Unity, with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) forming a separate panel. The ABVP characterized their gains as a breakthrough in the traditionally left-leaning JNU, referring to it as breaching the left’s “red fortress.”
The Left Unity, while acknowledging their victory, expressed concern about the ABVP’s resurgence and called for unity amongst progressive organizations to counter the perceived threat. Their platform focused on addressing issues such as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, hostel infrastructure, and campus recruitment. The celebrations following the results were marked by the presence of both red and saffron flags across the JNU campus.
