**Srinagar, J&K –** In the aftermath of the April 22nd Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people – including 25 tourists from across India and one Kashmiri local – Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah delivered a powerful speech to the state assembly, expressing hope that the widespread public condemnation of the violence marks a turning point in the fight against terrorism.
The attack, which targeted tourists at a popular scenic spot, elicited a rare display of unity within the Assembly. Opposition leader Sunil Sharma of the BJP praised Mr. Abdullah’s response, commending his convening of an all-party meeting and the Speaker’s decision to hold a special session.
During his address, Mr. Abdullah emotionally recounted the details of the attack, reading the names and home states of each victim, emphasizing the national scope of the tragedy. He highlighted the outpouring of grief and anger from across India, stating that the attack touched every corner of the country.
Mr. Abdullah acknowledged the failure to fully protect the tourists, expressing deep regret and offering condolences to the victims’ families. He particularly highlighted the bravery of Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a pony ride operator who lost his life while protecting tourists. The Chief Minister also praised the many ordinary Kashmiris who risked their own safety to assist the injured and provide aid.
While noting some instances of Kashmiri students facing difficulties elsewhere in India following the attack, Mr. Abdullah thanked those state governments who acted to ensure their safety. He expressed hope that the unprecedented public protests against the attack across Jammu and Kashmir signal a shift, with the population increasingly rejecting terrorism. This, he asserted, offers the potential to finally end the long-standing conflict. He stressed that true victory over militancy requires the cooperation of the people, indicating that the unified response to this tragedy provides an opportunity for lasting peace.
